Zakah is an obligatory charity in Islam, requiring Muslims to give 2.5% of their savings to the poor, debt-ridden, and needy. It purifies wealth and promotes social justice. The Quran states, “Take from their wealth a charity to purify and sanctify them.” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:103). The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, “Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Muslim, 2588). He also warned, “Wealth from which zakah is not paid will become a serpent that will encircle its owner’s neck on the Day of Judgment.” (Bukhari, 1403). Paying zakah ensures both spiritual growth and community welfare.
Donation is a voluntary act of generosity that supports humanitarian causes and relieves suffering. Unlike zakah, it has no fixed amount but carries immense rewards. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The believer’s shade on the Day of Judgment will be his charity.” (Tirmidhi, 604). He also encouraged, “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Tirmidhi, 589). The Quran reassures, “Whatever you spend in charity, He will compensate it.” (Surah Saba 34:39). Donations, big or small, spread kindness and bring blessings to both the giver and the receiver.
